Cyber Security is an essential aspect for all businesses to implement. Regarding your team, companies, or family, here are three things you can do to limit your risk of being hacked.
1.Strong password and change your password every 90 days.
Password123 or bobandjune01 are not passwords – these are easily guessed and with brute force. Brute Force relates to a programming method that takes a list of passwords (let’s say a list of a million most used) and spams your login credentials at lightning speeds to see if one of those passwords works. A password like NFGDL03id3)dlj3($fkd2# is much strong – who can remember something like that?
To accomplish this, you need a password manager – many people have them, and even browsers can have them for free. A password manager is like a digital vault for all your passwords. There is a lot to choose from, a few suggestions I would recommend is Bitwarden or 1Password – if you have one you like, stick with it.
2.Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Along with your password, you need to have a second authentication source, something that you own or that is yours– like your phone. Having a text sent to your phone can significantly increase security where just a password is used. This boosts your security to high levels.
If you just used these two items – the odds you will get hacked are very low. But one more thing is needed on our top 3 list.
3.Avoid clicking on any links from untrusted sources
Without thinking, one can click on a link in an email or website and download some malware or be taken to a site that ‘seems’ legit, but it is just a mask. In these cases, having a solid password can be mute if you type it on a fraudulent site or download a file that remembers your keystrokes and sends it to some hacker.
When it comes to clicking on a link, or if you do click on a link – make sure you are on the correct site by double-checking the URL. A slight misspelling in the URL, like ‘Gougle.com, ‘ can trip someone up if they are not careful, and you can be somewhere with malicious intent.
